Should Hindus Be Hating The Love Guru?
I have read in the news that Hindus in America are starting to get upset about the upcoming film labeled The Love Guru, which is to be released this summer. The India Heritage Panel declares "Hollywood is trying to make money by laughing at our holy men and in the process creating a stereotype."
The movie, starring Mike Meyers as a Guru (no kidding!) who is hired to help a hockey player get his wife back. When you see the trailer, the real question should be this; Why aren't more people offended by this movie. In the trailers alone, not only is there nothing funny about any of the scenes, but it's tacky, tasteless, and disgusting.
Mike Meyers seems to be trying his Austin Powers thing again, and just like Austin Powers, he doesn't understand what made it funny. We weren't laughing at himself, but both his inability to understand the world and the world's refusal to understand Austin. The Love Guru seems to think this character and all that he stands for is fodder for jokes. To make a premise like this funny, you have to make the guru the guy who knows what he's going and the world the fool for understanding him.
Another good question to ask is what kind of person would find The Love Guru funny? Agreed, I haven't seen the film in it's entirety and it could be that the movie itself is much more tolerant than the trailer. But several points are not indicating this. 1.) If you look at the trend, Mike Meyers' movies get less funnier (You can't say that Goldmember was funnier than The Spy Who Shagged Me, lest to mention the first Powers movie. Even the Shrek movies got less funnier). 2.) If Meyers or any other member of the production of The Love Guru thought this trailer was tasteless or against the spirit of the movie itself, they would have taken the trailer out of play and apologized.
From the appearances at this point, I have no interest in seeing this movie, though I could change my mind if circumstances change. Check out the trailer and ask yourself if this is something you would want to spend money on...
